Door Handing Identification Guide
How to determine whether your door is right-handed or left-handed.
You should stand on the outside of the door.
- Determine the door handing so you can identify whether the lock you need is right-handed or left-handed.
- From the outside of the house, observe whether the hinges are on the left or right side while facing the door. The hinge position determines the handing of the door and therefore the handing of the lock. For example, if the hinges are on the right side when viewed from outside, then your door is right-handed and the lock you need is also right-handed.
- Another simple way to confirm the door and lock handing is to check which hand you use to open the door from the outside. For example, if you open the door with your right hand, then the door is right-handed and the required lock is also right-handed.
